Correspondence, 1993.

In celebration of the ninetieth anniversary of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Scripps Technical Publications Officer Kittie Kuhns and Scripps historian Elizabeth Noble Shor sent a notice to Scripps alumni and past and present Scripps employees asking that they write their reminiscences of the institution. This collection consists of the letters they received in reply to their request. The letters are arranged alphabetically by author and include reminiscences by Lloyd Anderson, Charles C. Bates, John E. Cromwell, Sayed A. El Wardani, Gordon Groves, Steacy D. Hicks, John Knauss, Dale F. Leipper, Ken Norris, John E. McCosker, Colm O hEocha, Andreas B. Rechnitzer, Richard Rosenblatt, Harris B. Stewart and George Weisel. Many of these letters recall oceanographer Harald U. Sverdrup. Harris B. Stewart sent a manuscript entitled, "The Unpredictable Mistress: Intimate Glimpses of an Oceanographer's Longtime Affair with the Sea" with his letter. The letters were edited by Kittie Kuhns and Elizabeth Noble Shor and published in Scripps Stories: Days to Remember in Celebration of 90 Years (SIO Reference Series 93-35, 1993, 145p.).

While at Scripps, then part of UCLA, Andy, Connie Limbaugh, and Jim Stewart developed the first SCUBA diver training program for ocean scientists, which included such innovations as ditch-and-don, buddy breathing, and the buddy system.
